On April 24, the European Centre for Development, Studies and Geostrategic Analysis (ECDSGA) hosted a distinguished “Voice and Power” summit at the European Parliament in Brussels, shining a spotlight on women’s leadership. The event brought together 142 women from 40 different nationalities, as part of an initiative aimed at promoting peace and highlighting women’s crucial role in its establishment.
Dr. Aisha Boshqa, President and Founder of the Centre, lauded the significant support the initiative received from Ms. Estelle Solimenz, Member of the European Parliament, and Ms. Nevruz Unal, Member of the Ixelles Municipal Council.
The summit featured three main panels:
Women’s Leadership in Institutions
The first panel focused on women’s leadership in institutions, showcasing the experiences of prominent women in decision-making positions. Speakers included Genevieve van der Muren, Director of Civil Security in Belgium, and Christine Joan Bruno, a UNESCO programs expert. Participants emphasized the importance of women’s presence in leadership roles and their vital contribution to peace-building.
Experiences of Women from Conflict Zones
The second panel was dedicated to sharing the experiences of women from conflict zones. Participants presented their stories of confronting wars, embodying women’s resilience and their effective contributions to peace processes. Tahani Al-Ammari, representing the Yemeni Forum in Belgium, highlighted the suffering of the Yemeni people and the impact of wars on women and children. She stressed the necessity of supporting and empowering Yemeni women, as well as the urgent need to stop the war and facilitate humanitarian aid.
Women’s Role in Shaping a Peaceful Future
The third panel, moderated by Dr. Mariama Sangiana Camara-Ricci, featured inspiring interventions from leading women who underscored women’s role in creating a peaceful future where their voices are heard.
This event marks a pivotal moment in the global journey of women’s empowerment, reflecting an open call to strengthen their status and role in building sustainable peace.
